Keith, owner/operator of the Wild Bee Company, started his journey with bees about 20 years ago when a swarm of honeybees settled on a fence in his backyard in Seattle. From that moment, beekeeping was a consistent part of his life. As a beginning beekeeper, Keith was always on the lookout for swarms to add to his apiary and soon realized his background as a carpenter was a great asset. The ability to quickly and neatly open up walls, expose and remove honeybee colonies, then do the necessary repairs, quickly led to work removing bees nesting inside structures. These first jobs laid the foundation for the WBC and a new career.
As concerns about pollinator health and the excessive use of insecticides grew, a move toward poison free removal of all stinging insects seemed to make sense. In 2011, the Wild Bee Company became official. The time since then has been one of constant learning and change. After a few thousand removals/relocations, the process looks quite different than 10 years ago. New tools, lots of ideas (some good), a few mistakes, and more stings than one could count, have made each season better than the last.
Prior to making WBC a full time endeavor, Keith held a variety of jobs including carpenter, elementary school teacher, outdoor educator, and sea kayaking guide to name a few. Nowadays, WBC keeps things pretty busy spring through fall with a nice break during the winter. When not working, Keith enjoys spending time with his wife and young daughter, fishing in the sound and local rivers, gardening, and throwing pots in his ceramic studio.
